Category: Indoor Activities

Welcome to the Arizona Museum for Youth, where it’s adventure time from the instant you enter until the moment you leave. Some of the key upcoming events include:

Wing It!  All Things That Fly – February 10th through May 6th, 2012

An exhibition that features artwork that showcases our collective fascination with the creatures, inventions and fantasies which allow us to venture up, up and away!

Extreme Pets – May 25th through September 9th, 2012

Domestic animals are not possessions. They are members of the family. Whether it be dog, cat, birds, hamsters, lizards, goats, horses or elephants, our pets provide us with unconditional love. Extreme Pets takes an artistic look at the relationship people have with pets and how much they affect our lives.

Show Me The Money – September 28th through January 20, 2013

Show Me the Money bring to life through art some of the things that make the world go around: dollars, banknotes, bankrolls, bills, bread, bucks, capital, cash, checks, chips, coins, coinage, dough, finances, funds, gold, gravy, greenbacks, hard cash, legal tender, loot, pesos, riches, roll, salary, silver, treasures, wad, wages, and wealth. No matter what you call it, money is an interesting subject to illustrate through art.

Check out membership. For frequent visitors it might be worth considering.

There are a ton of other events listed for 2012. Check the event calendar (link below).

Since 1955 the Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show has set the pace in the Arabian horse world. The first show was held at the grounds of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel which was a beautiful setting for a horse show. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show was a first class show from the very first day.

After the show’s beginnings at the Arizona Biltmore, Ann McCormick bought 150 acres in Scottsdale and made it into the horse facility known as Paradise Park which served the needs of the show for many years.

Since that time, the show has been held at Westworld in Scottsdale. It has grown from 50 horses to nearly 2400 horses bringing top owners, trainers and breeders from around the world competing for a chance at winning. A win at Scottsdale can mean big money in the breeding barns.

Family Fun Night: Friday on February 24, 2012 admission will be free for ALL spectators after 3pm. Bring the whole family for a fun evening at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Have dinner, peruse the Shopping Expo and watch the beautiful Arabian horses compete for the coveted title of Scottsdale Champion.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Fully Charged Tour The “Greatest Show on Earth” is back in town for just a few short engagements. Welcome to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Fully Charged Tour.

This isn’t the circus of your childhood (unless you’re a child). This is an experience unlike anything you could imagine. Stars are and acts are as diverse as your tastes. From the Danguir Troupe 4-story highwire act to Fernandez Brothers and Wheels of Steel – the show is something you could imagine watching on TV or at an IMAX show. Want to see a guy get fired from a crossbow? Yeah, they’ve got that….

There’s an opportunity to meet the animals in the “Animal Open House” and a pre-show party, with an opportunity to meet and interact with the show’s acts.

Check the Fully Charged Tour website below for some great photos and video.

The show is in town until 6/27 with one or two performances per day (three on Saturday).

Yard Sale shopping in the Valley“One man’s junk is another man’s treasure,” goes the saying, and when it comes to yard sales (estate sales, car port sales or garage sales), nothing could be more true. Wherever you are in the country, getting up at the crack of dawn (or before), one a Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning and going yard-sale-ing is a lot of fun. Many of us harbor that secret wish that we’ll find the lost Picasso (here’s a story about someone who did), or the rare comic book, or record, coin, collectible Barbie doll, or whatever…at yard sales, you just never know!

Even if your ultimate treasure isn’t on the discovery list, yard sale shopping is one of those wonderful activities that can cost little to nothing and can yield some wonderful finds. From knick-knacks to furniture, boats, televisions, gym equipment to books, who knows where your little yard sale adventure will take you?

In the valley during the summer, yard sales start early, often pre-dawn. The hard-core yard sale enthusiasts are often out before many alarm clocks have woken up the rest of the shoppers, hoping to get in and and browse before anyone else. Yard sale days are often Friday and/or Saturday. There are Sunday yard sales too, but these tend to be fewer in number. They’re all over the Valley, from Carefree to Buckeye, New River to Queen Creek. It’s a tough job to hit them all!

While driving around looking for “yard sale” signs, is one strategy to finding destinations, many people check the local paper a day or two ahead. Sites such as Craigslist and Yardsale.com, AZCentral, and others are also good places to check, and can help you with route planning. These are also useful to check if you’re looking for something specific. If you hit the yard sale jackpot and find a community or multi-family yard sale or garage sale you could spend hours happily browsing among the knick-knacks!

Here are a few links to yard sale information pages on the web. Be diligent. Information online cannot be guaranteed, so use appropriate caution and play it safe. If you find the next big thing, like a copy of the Declaration of Independence stuck in an old picture frame (a true story – here’s a link), please let us know!

Happy trails!
