Welcome to the Arizona Museum for Youth, where it’s adventure time from the instant you enter until the moment you leave. Some of the key upcoming events include:

Wing It!  All Things That Fly – February 10th through May 6th, 2012

An exhibition that features artwork that showcases our collective fascination with the creatures, inventions and fantasies which allow us to venture up, up and away!

Extreme Pets – May 25th through September 9th, 2012

Domestic animals are not possessions. They are members of the family. Whether it be dog, cat, birds, hamsters, lizards, goats, horses or elephants, our pets provide us with unconditional love. Extreme Pets takes an artistic look at the relationship people have with pets and how much they affect our lives.

Show Me The Money – September 28th through January 20, 2013

Show Me the Money bring to life through art some of the things that make the world go around: dollars, banknotes, bankrolls, bills, bread, bucks, capital, cash, checks, chips, coins, coinage, dough, finances, funds, gold, gravy, greenbacks, hard cash, legal tender, loot, pesos, riches, roll, salary, silver, treasures, wad, wages, and wealth. No matter what you call it, money is an interesting subject to illustrate through art.

Check out membership. For frequent visitors it might be worth considering.

Located in the heart of Arizona and only 90 short miles north of Phoenix sits  America’s most vertical city, Jerome. 5,200 miles up on Cleoparta Hill, Jerome is famous for being the largest ghost town in America.  Jerome is definitely a great day trip from Phoenix, and a unique place to get away from the routine in our lives.  Dating back to 1876, learn and tour the history of Arizona’s largest copper mining camp, and walk the galleries of local artists, craft people, and gift shop proprietors who all use the original buildings for their shops.  Pop in for lunch at the famous Haunted Hamburger and hear the stories of it’s ghostly guests.  Be careful here – if you order the chocolate cake, be prepared to eat 1/4th of a double layered piece of round cake because that is the way they serve it.

Jerome is definitely a fun and interesting place to spend a day with your sweetie, or the whole family.  When you go, don’t miss these other great sites:

Grand Hotel – Jerome’s hospital and psychiatric ward in the heyday.  Fabulous old day decor and great stories of the haunting of past patients.  The front desk houses a book where guests have recorded paranormal testimony during their stay!

Douglas Mansion State Park – A historic mansion built in 1916 by James Douglas to accommodate and entertain mining officials and investors.

Gold King Mine and Ghost Town – Authentic walks in the mine shaft, demonstrations of antique mining equipment, a 1901 blacksmith shop, and the world’s largest gas engines.

Paso de Casas – Visit historic buildings and homes on a guided tour. Annual tour every third weekend in May.

The Mile High Inn – Former home to Jerome’s most popular bordello.

Endless Photo Opportunities – Shutter bugs will be in awe of all the beautiful images Jerome offers up!

Things to do in Phoenix : Learn how to Scrapbook

Nice scrapbooks are a treasure, the artwork enhances the content. They’re a labor of love, and part of a tradition that goes back to centuries past. Part of the allure is that anyone can make a scrapbook, using nearly any material at hand.

At Scrapbooks Etc, you can learn the secret to making your scrapbook project a masterpiece. Whether you’re interested in the basics, or a scrap booking guru looking for ideas, at Scrapbooks etc, they have the classes, resources, and supplies you need.

There are classes for the scrap booking newbie, no experience necessary. You can learn how to preserve old photographs, make calendars, and learn the software…there’s software? Products such as Adobe’s Photoshop Elements allow you to design on the screen. Imagine seeing your dream design on the monitor, then print and go! At Scrapbooks Etc, you can take a class to get the most from your computer.

If you don’t have space at home, and would like to work with friends, then Scrapbooks Etc offers an “open lab” where, for $5 per person, you can work with all the tools you need for your scrap booking projects (materials not included).

So, when you get a moment, check out the Scrapbooks Etc event calendar on their website (see below) and head on down for a class. They also offer a huge range of quilting and sewing classes…but that’s another post :)

Finally, Scrapbooks Etc has a “yard sale” where you can actually sell what you’ve made…are you ready?

Things to do in Phoenix : Pottery PaintingWhen was the last time you sat down at a table and painted anything “just for the fun of it”?

There is something almost therapeutic in pottery painting. Perhaps it’s because the process is creative. You start with a blank slate, your chosen piece and by applying your imagination, the finished work is yours. It’s a wonderful way to spend a few hours alone, with a friend, with kids.

In recent years, several pottery painting stores (or “studios”) have opened up in the Phoenix area. These include As You Wish, with locations all over the Valley. For $8 ($6 for kids) plus the price of the pottery, you can paint to your heart’s content. Be sure to download and print the coupon from their website (see below) to save $2. They offer painting classes and party packages.

Paint on Pottery is charges a flat $6 per person. Pottery pieces average $15-$20, according to their website. They offer painting classes and party packages.

Create It! In Mesa, includes the painting fees in the price of it’s pieces (most are in the $20) range. They also offer party packages.

The Craft Retreat is an “all you can craft” type of studio with scrapbooking,, cracfting and mosaics available. The price of pottery painting is $7.50 plus the price of the piece.

By the way, all of the above studios include the price of “firing” (glazing) their pieces. This takes a couple of days, so be sure to allow the additional time if you’re on a schedule!

We’ll keep adding to this page, so check back!
